<<It seems to me that dissecting the book and only accepting those things you agree with negates faith. Only by accepting and finding quality in the entire book, even the parts that you personally abhor, can you be said to have faith.>>

I think you can. Certainly not everything can be taken at face value in the Bible or any other book of religion. There are complex and cryptic things that I don't think we'll ever be able to understand. But does that impact the ability to have faith? I don't think so and this is why.

Faith and hope are qualities that all human beings need in one capacity or another. Now that doesn't mean it has to be religious at its core but it is the most commonly sought after vehicle to find these things. All to often we as people struggle with things that are out of control. It's a futile exercise since in the grand scheme of things we have no control. But Faith helps many people put these things aside because they've been classically conditioned to give things out of their control up to "Gods will". I'm not going to weigh in with my opinion on whether God exists but I can say without hesitation that faith itself plays a positive role for many people. It's been a method to free them of the weights tied to there waist and I don't think thats all bad. Now are there things I question about organized religion? Sure. We've fought a lot of wars in the name of God and human rights that I don't think he'd approve of. Nor do I think he'd approve of his name being associated with those actions. But the cookbook for a good life can be found in many religions and I'd be the last person to discount the value they provide society. As a person with epilepsy I know the bible says we should treat this with leeches LOL!! DO I buy it - no. But I do buy the many good pieces of advice that come with the bible. Don't through the baby out with the bath water would be the thought of the day on this issue.

Interesting that you should pick that passage as a basis for stating that:

"You can't pick and chose which of God's words you will follow and which you won't. You are either all in, or you aren't."

So, you are preaching this to fourth graders, huh...

On hearing this:..."Take your son, your only son Isaac, ...

Little Johnny raises his hand and asks what happened to Ishmael. You know, the one who the Arch Angel tells Hagar, 'We establish our covenant with this son also.'

I often wonder why there is only indirect reference to Ishmael and his lineage after that and that this reference you give denies his being all together. Seems he was supposed to be the father of nations and Kings and such ... Israelis and Arabs are cousins. Do you find the lack of reference to the history of Ishmael interesting?

And then Johnny asks, by the way, about this kid Ishmael... You say...

"Genesis - 14: And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

... Isn't it odd that Hagar would have to carry a teenager and these supplies on her shoulder. Because by all accounts Ishmael had to have been at least thirteen years old of more at this time. The Bible says he was born when Abraham was 86 and that Abraham had himself and Ishmael circumsized prior to this wilderness thingy when Abraham was 99.

Why is Johnny so confused?

Oh God said to abraham ’kill me a son’
Abe said ’man you must be puttin me on’
God said ’no’, abe said ’what’
God say ’you can do what you wanna but
The next time you see me comin you better run’
Well abe said ’where d’you want this killin done’
God said ’out on highway 61’
Well georgia sam he had a bloody nose
Welfare department wouldn’t give him no clothes
They asked poor howard where can I go
Howard said ’there’s only one place I know’
Sam said ’tell me quick man I got to run’
Oh howard just pointed with his gun
And said ’that way down highway 61’
Well mack the finger said to louie the king
’i got 40 red white and blue shoestrings
And a thousand telephone that don’t ring.
Do you know where I can get rid of these things? ’
And louie the king said ’let me think for a minute son’
Then he said ’yes I think it can be easily done
Just take everything down to highway 61’
Now the 5th daughter on the 12th night
Told the first father that things weren’t right
’my complexion’, she says, ’is much too white’
He said ’come here and step into the light’
He said ’hmm you’re right let me tell the 2nd mother this has been done’
But the 2nd mother was with the 7th son
And they were both out on highway 61
Now the roving gambler he was very bored
Trying to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said ’i never engaged in this kind of thing before
But yes, i think it can be very easily done
We’ll just put some bleachers out in the sun
And have it on highway 61’

HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED
