Is it true that he had been congratulated just "days before for exemplary work"? Is it true that you told him that his position was being eliminated? Is it true that you subsequently did advertise for someone to fill that position? I'd like to know those answers, too.I would like to hear your side before I conclude that Steve's layoff was politically motivated. Should you choose not to respond, I will of course be forced to conclude that the facts as related are correct. However, answers to them won't inform the question of whether the dismissal was politically motivated. If you are trimming fat, which is what the company claims, then all those things could easily have occurred, would likely have occurred, without any ulterior motive. You would have been planning the layoffs for some time. If you dismissed a bunch of employees on the same day, that suggests that he was probably just one of the pack, not singled out. He wasn't dismissed for performance so he may easily have gotten a good performance evaluation concurrent with his dismissal. I understand that he was offered retention as a contractor or temp or some such so he could have stayed on although contractors typically earn less. Offering him a position at lower costs suggests they didn't want to get rid of him, just cut costs. And if they're filling his position, is it at a lower salary? You didn't ask that and that's important. If they're filling it at the same or greater salary, then you have justification for suspecting foul play. Even the email notification can be explained although I won't because the explanation is thing and the practice is just too shabby. But shabbiness has nothing to do with political payback. I would want to know when the decision was made to dismiss that group of people. The timeline on this is important. And I would want to verify that he was offered retention. I'm saddened by the stampede to trash this company. It's not very "conservative" to bury a business without evidence. Neither is it moral. If they deserve it, fine. But right now there are only suspicions as far as I can tell.
