mindmeld, the Chinese are working on their TD-SCDMA (Time Division Duplex - Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) standard -- as I indicated in my previous post. Their developing partner, Siemens, has already signed a royalty license covering TD-SCDMA.

That fact combined with the fact that Chinese manufacturers have already signed licenses for other flavors of CDMA ... sets a strong precedent IMO.

re "When I used to own the stock, I remember that this was a big problem for QCOM, in that they were having alot of trouble getting companies to license their standard because of the Chinese hope of their own royalty-free standard. "

I'm sure some, maybe lots, of Chinese are still hoping TD-SCDMA will be free of Qualcomm royalties ... but that hasn't prevented anyone from signing license agreements for other flavors of CDMA. Virtually, everyone that's anyone in the cellular phone business has already done so. Indeed, I can't think of any that has not.
