the relatively large deliveries taken in Dec. gold ( over 700K. oz, which is more than a BoE auction, or roughly 23 tons, worth about $315 million ) can probably be explained by a combination of a ) seasonal demand and b ) the ETF.
of course i'm not sure about that...if it's NOT the ETF that is the proximate cause, then it's remarkable. i dimly recall Middle Eastern traders taking large deliveries in the 70's, both in gold and silver ( sometimes in concert with the Hunts ) .
it would certainly be significant if something similar is going on here. note though that the warehouses are bulging with bullion, so don't get your shortage hopes up.
