<It's also more visible to fight a tangible military war, than combat a virus through less tangible research for a vaccine. >

I suppose it's the old difference between real-man alpha-male jocks and brainy nerdsville geeks.

The nerds actually do the stuff that matters and the tough guys rule the roost. Arnie gets to be Governor of California though there really aren't many real-life requirements for "I'll be back!" Square-jawed soldiers look good in movies. The man in the white lab coat is a bore.

The glory goes to the physical and tribal fighters. So do the resources. Somehow a bug is less scary than an AK47-armed jihadi, although one jihadi can kill maybe 100 whereas one bug can slip inside, breed and kill 50 million. Yet the bug isn't impressive and neither are those who would defeat it.

WHO issues bird flu warning
Medical News Today Tue, 30 Nov 2004 2:29 AM PST
Bird flu could be more deadly than the SARS virus, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO is warning that the H5N1 flu strain could infect up to 30 per cent of the world's population, possibly killing millions of people within weeks.

Tick tock....
