I feel what the article fails to mention is the history of this rise of fascism in the US, because it did not start with W. In fact, W is near the end (both of the alphabet and the development of fascism in the US).

In my opinion, the three main pillars of fascism are 1. control of the economy by big business, 2. a populace which is very religion orientated and 3. militarism. Clearly, all these have been central to the American social/political scene for a long time already. What we have seen under W is a cranking-up of all of these three factors. In fact, because the die was already cast, it would not have made much difference to the development of fascism in the US if Kerry had been elected although people may still have been under the illusion for a bit longer that the US was a "democracy".
