Ridge's Successor Faces Daunting Task

potential replacement.... note recent action taken.

BY LEONARD LEVITT
STAFF WRITER

December 1, 2004

Former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik recently sold $5 million of Taser stock amid speculation in some law enforcement circles that he is being considered to succeed Tom Ridge to head the Department of Homeland Security.

Kerik's sale of Taser stock coincides with that of Taser's chief executive and co-founder Patrick Smith and Smith's brother, Taser president Thomas Smith. Kerik has sat on the board of the stun gun company since 2002.

He has close relations with Madeline Albright, the secretary of state in the Democratic Clinton administration, Zbigniew Brzezinski, the national security advisor under former president Jimmy Carter, and the financier George Soros.

I would not call Madeline Albright, Zbigniew Brzezinski and George Soros "the US". Albright served under Clinton, Brzezinski under Carter, and my understanding is that Brzezinski, for one, was advising Kerry. Soros, of course, spent many millions promoting Kerry's campaign.

Whatever strategy these individuals had with respect to Yushchenko, I have no idea, but it's impossible for me to believe that they were advancing official Bush administration policy, or any US policy at all.

Soros is a major flake.
