It is true, I can hardly object to the call for better PR. It is the lead that I objected to: that they hate us for our policies. I object on two grounds: the average Muslim may reflect anti- American attitudes, but I doubt he hates America, which is, after all, still the favorite place for exchange students from that part of the world. Second, even the Palestinians continue to trust America enough to rely on it to move the peace process forward, despite accusations of tilting towards Israel. Considering that we are Israel's major supporter, that is a lot of respect. Third, no regime in the region has seriously undermined our operation in Iraq. Diplomatic protests have been tepid. Saddam is quite right to feel that he was abandoned by his Arab brethren. Has even one Arab state broken off diplomatic relations in protest? Finally, the press in that part of the world is notoriously unreliable in its reporting and inflammatory in its rhetoric. Anti- Americanism has long been a staple of the Muslim press. I question whether "our policies" drive anti- American sentiment, or the portrayal of America as the world hegemon, Jew- ridden and determined to humiliate and exploit the Muslim peoples........
