I'm calling PETA if you all don't stop it. Sheesh!

good lord e

"It's only human nature for one's belief system to influence their decisions in matters of justice, whether consciously or subconsciously."

The above applies to both of us. We have different belief and value systems that came into conflict in that episode- and I am not going to ever believe your behavior was appropriate, or change my mind about what the greater evil was in that situation, because my belief and value systems remain unchanged in that regard. I assume you won't be changing your mind either, even if you did understand my position, which it is clear to me you do not, and never will. We probably both think the other equally and horribly wrong, though.

You can keep bringing it up until the cows come home, but it really isn't going to change any minds. The people who agree with you, will continue (most probably, unless you bore them to death) to agree with you, and the people who don't, won't.

And btw, I think you are trying to obfuscate this issue- private messages should remain private, and you should not ask anyone to give out private messages that were sent privately, even if they affect you. Why? I want you to think about all the private messages you have sent over your years on si, and I want you to think about whether each person whom they affected (and perhaps think about the past event you just mentioned) should be able to have access to all those messages, because they may have been affected by them. Please, don't answer me. I don't really want to know what you say after first reading this- I want you to think about it. Just think about it.

I can't even imagine what went on here in my absence. I must say that, speaking personally, I think it might continue to violate Poet's privacy to relive the thing over and over again (perhaps Poet does not feel that way, though). I am not sure this is solvable, but I do want to make clear that quite a few of the people involved are posting at Feelies, so somehow you need to figure out how to let this go as something to argue about, to put in a place where it is not going to continue to hurt everyone concerned. I am not asking for anyone to change their mind, just to put it aside somehow. Because everyone is welcome here, from how ever many sides of this argument there are.

The threads at SI have been bloodied by huge fights for several years. I am really curious as to whether this means that cyber communities are just not viable places--that too many of the senses we use in relating to each other are missing when we just stare at words on a screen, or whatever. But that is way too philosophical a discussion to have this late at night.

So, anyway, it is possible to move on from this? I wish people would consider the question, because this is not working very well.
