It used to be you could buy chickens and eggs direct from the farmers in my area. Most of the new farmers are too busy to mess with chickens and eggs. I remember seeing chickens in yards and in the cattle feeding lots.

Years ago before commercial feed was available and farmers would coop the chickens during winter and feed them home grown grain. The common practice was to kill a rabbit, skin it and hang it in the coop. The chickens would peck it and get their protein from the rabbit carcass.
