He failed to move into SA before the US put troops in his way. Who's to say he would make that mistake twice.

Powell knew Saddam could be taken out back and destroyed. *HE* knew that there was nothing to fear there in Gulf War I, and *he* knew that there was precious little left of Saddam's army after that rout.

And roll forward to the present, ignoring for a moment that the war was both illegal and uncalled for:

Rumsfeld *knew* this in 2003, and in 2002 when the planning for Iraq War II was being done up or he would *never* have considered sending in only 50,000 troops.

They knew that most of Iraq's rolling armor had been destroyed, and not replaced, in GW I.

They knew that Iraq didn't have a functioning airforce.

They knew that they had destroyed most of Iraq's air defenses.

They already had air superiority over Iraq, and had that for a decade.

I could go on but its not worth my time to point out basic truths if you aren't interested in seeing them for what they are.
