In his opening statement in an unusual trial against the Quranic Literacy Institute and other groups, attorney Richard Hoffman said the institute is a front for alleged Hamas fund-raiser and recruiter Muhammad Salah of Bridgeview and gave Hamas "a veneer of legitimacy" while hiding its activities . The civil case, heard before a jury this week and next, essentially puts the Hamas organization on trial and seeks to hold U.S. groups that fund Hamas financially responsible for overseas terrorist acts . Quranic Literacy Institute revealed Wednesday that because of financial restraints, it will not take part in the proceedings aside from having an attorney present. QLI is the last defendant in the case brought by Stanley and Joyce Boim, former New Yorkers who moved to Jerusalem. The couple's 17-year-old son, David, was gunned down by Hamas terrorists in 1996 as he waited at a bus stop near the West Bank. The Boims' lawsuit, filed in 2000, seeks $600 million and targets Salah and three other fund-raising groups. Salah was indicted this year on federal charges he was an instigator in the Hamas organization. The Boims say the groups are financially responsible for their son's death because they knowingly funded a violent terrorist group. U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys last month agreed and ruled against all of the defendants except QLI. A jury, chosen Wednesday, will decide if Quranic is also responsible and will decide what damages to award the Boims. After his ruling last month, QLI asked Keys to postpone the trial, saying it now faced a different legal landscape and citing "crushing" legal costs. Keys denied the motion. In a letter to Keys, QLI Secretary Amer Haleem said QLI can no longer pay for its attorney, John Beal, who sat alone Wednesday before a large, empty table. -------------------Diamond Hitts Production (BB: DHTT) By: salemshexnwo 19 Jul 2003, 10:51 AM EDT Msg. 8714 of 14434 Jump to msg. # Bushie is dreaming, ain't gonna happen. Money is plentiful if you know the right people and belong to the right organizations. And people will never stop giving to worthwhile fellowships like the Hamas . "I urge the leaders in Europe and around the world to take swift, decisive action against terror groups such Hamas, to cut off their funding and ... support, as the United States has done." Praise be the most holy Sheikh Ahmad Yassin! ---------------
