Chip sales expected to decline 2% in 2005: IDC By Tomi Kilgore
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Worldwide sales of semiconductors are projected to decline 2 percent in 2005, according to information technology market intelligence firm IDC, as overproduction resulting from supplier expectations of high demand spurs a correction phase. Price pressures, lower utilization rates and reduced capital spending is expected to hurt sales in the first half of 2005, IDC said, while corporate PC, mobile phone replacement cycles and increased demand for consumer electronics should help clear inventories and sales return to growth by the second half of 2005. Growth is expected to resume in 2006. For 2004, IDC continues to expect sales growth of 26 percent.
