Jack, Soros has become a limousine liberal and did what you might expect a rich one to do.

I don't know why folk get their knickers in a twist over him when rich folk like Scaife spent millions trying, unsuccessfully, to put down Bill Clinton. If it's a free country then you should expect folk to spend their money how they like.

I think what's heartening is that both Soros and Scaife were unsuccessful in their ventures. Money clearly isn't everything.

What I said, and what you don't seem to want to look at, is that when the Soviets fell apart Soros did a lot of good work there promoting democracy and market economies.

Soros is contradictory. He's in favour of markets, but not free markets. He's in favour of democracy and spent a lot of money promoting it in not necessarily favourable environment, but also seems in favour of socialism. He's in favour of freedom, but thinks the UN is a vehicle for promoting it. (Hah!)

And so forth.

Soros's views are probably shared by most of the 49% of the US electorate who voted for Kerry.

"Smear campaign"?

He gave his money to the democrats and they spent it the usual way against Bush just as the republicans spent theirs in the usual way against Kerry. Politics is not kindergarten. We run an election campaign - they run a smear campaign.

Unlike Michael Moore, he's not a dishonest creep and has done some good work. He's wrong, wrong, wrong about lots of stuff but that's another matter.
