You are not getting the point. It has been a big mistake since the election season began to suggest that we were eager to find a way out, rather than resolved to finish the job. It is fine to make it clear that our general intention is to turn over security to the Iraqis and demobilize, but we should not have been wringing our hands and showing that we were entertaining "declaring victory" or willing to stipulate minimum conditions for leaving, or a time table. I would say that the American election itself added months to the occupation, and made it harder to resolve matters without having to flex muscles again and again.
