Here’s a laughable example that cost a young hothead journalist her job. Rachel Buchman, a 25-year old reporter with WHYY public radio in Philadelphia had just about enough of the ultra right-wing Web site laptoplobbyist.com. So she decided to tell them off on their voice mail: “Hi, my name is Rachel, and my telephone number is… I wanted to tell you that you’re evil, horrible people. You’re awful people. You represent horrible ideas. God hates you and he wants to kill your children. You should all burn in hell. Bye.” I find laptoplobbyist.com often to be less than tasteful, but I want your children to die because of it? So this is what they teach in j-school nowadays? The Web site has put her message up to download. Its operators e-mailed it to its 150,000 members, and Buchman resigned later that afternoon. “It was a personal matter that was turned into a public issue,” she said. “Rather than call my journalistic integrity into question, I decided to resign for personal reasons.” First of all, wishing death on people, especially children, is not a personal matter. Laptoplobbyist seems to have violated its privacy statement by publishing her remarks, but I tell you what – you wish death on my family and I’m making sure your boss, your family, your neighbors and everyone in the whole damn country finds out about it. Lastly, she resigned so as not to “call [her] journalistic integrity into question"? A little late for that, don’t you think? Keep in mind, kids: She is just one hothead who let her emotions get the best of her. Reporters in the safety of their newsrooms or huddled in bars reinforcing their groupthink say stuff like this all the time. Buchman was just stupid enough to leave her remarks on a permanent medium. Fortunately, Google and other search engines have a photographic memory. A search of her name by any prospective journalistic employer will reveal this episode. Hopefully this is one less biased “journalist” who will no longer have a role in skewing the news. Miss Buchman, if you want to put your money where your mouth is and try to rid the world of some evil conservatives, good luck. A lot of us have guns.
