stop at a red light then just sit there doing nothing until someone beeped

You would be in a heap of trouble if you did this in the metro DC area.

Note that the link always takes the reader to their *own* profile.

I remember stumbling upon those links. For a while it was a fad. It always worked. Inevitably some unsuspecting soul would get really exercised about it, thinking everyone had access to his or her PMs. It became an automatic suspension because of the hassle it caused for the site admins. That was fun!

I think the best "moron" experiment

My one of my best moron experiences (I changed the subject slightly) was on this thread. One evening, everyone was playing around with adding java script to his or her profile. This activity is now know as the “cross-site scripting” hack. People would add java script to their profile and use the “alert” method to pop up a message when someone “read” his or her profile. You could “program” it to display a popup message box that said something like “Howdy Moron!”.

I’m sure that upstream on this thread there a few posts that say: “Hey look at my profile now, with a link to their profile.

I inserted an alert into my profile that said: “Format Hard Drive?” The only choice in the popup dialog box was “OK”.

If you were following along you knew it was a joke.

A poster named turboe, or something like that, spammed my profile to many of the most active threads of the time.

Clicking on my profile freaked a few people out. Tokyo Joe when faced with the choice and ... well, no other choice, powered off his computer. When he got back on, he was mad.

I started getting some PMs about it. It took awhile but I realized that my profile was all over SI and that I was probably about to be suspended from SI.

Here’s the ironic part, the part I think is funny. turboe was going all over SI posting messages saying: “Check this profile out” when I changed it to a pop up alert that said: “Turboe is an idiot”, instead of "Format your hard drive?"

He emailed me right after the change and I think he almost split a gut laughing about it. I know I did.

OK maybe you had to be there.

There are so many funny things that happend on SI. What's the most recent really funny thing that has happened on SI?
