I never thought of them as anything but a force for good. Granted, they are idealistic, and they tend to go after despots and democrats equally- probably because they have more luck changing things for the better in civilized countries. While I know this bugs some people- who want to go mano a mano with barbarians (like terrorists) I prefer to think we could hold ourselves to a higher standard and still "win"- because I think a win is when our society becomes more just, and more humane, not less so.

Now some people simply don't believe we can act humanely to our detainees and prisoners in the face of attacks by terrorists. To them I say, if that is the case, then the terrorists have already won- and our society is already degrading, and we are already becoming what we claimed we were fighting. That is the Apocalypse Now problem.

Got an example? I have not seen one.....I have seen some legitimate questions raised about the Red Cross.....the scrutiny is healthy IMO....
