Who says they are mutually exclusive?

They need not be. But the great majority of intellectuals I have associated with in higher education -- who lead a sheltered life in the stacks of the library -- do not have practical skills nor even very good people skills. They are snobbish, aloof, far detached from the hard realties of the world, and prefer only their own company.

Of course you can just imagine what THEY would have to say about ME. ;-)

But on the other hand, you got a whole bunch of intellectuals (rather than just the one mechanic). It's often more fun to talk to a group- especially when they are all educated and liberal and like poetry. I might never want to leave that island.
