Friends don’t let friends buy things with micro drives.

I was at a conference a couple weeks ago for evidentiary photographers. They was a discussion about about flash memory versus micro drive. In addition to the higher durability in as defined by the ability to absorb shock as measured in “G”s there is an interesting nuance. The heads float above the disk surface on a drive. The distance is maintained by many very small raised “dimples” on the surfaces on the disc that generates a cushion of air between the head. At higher altitude (I live at 7,000 feet) there is an accelerated wear of the dimples because of the thinner air, that will eventually cause the dimples to be leveled and will cause a head crash, especially from a cold start. Above 12,000 feet whether a disk based music player or in a digital camera this can occur in minutes. Especially if there are additional motions to the disk drive from skiing or hiking.

Pomps, this is getting a bit old...

...but I will continue to say that SanDisk needs to demonstrate a transition from
its maturing market segments (digital cameras, PDA's and USB drives) to emerging markets.
That said, until we start hearing sales reports on mini-SD and transflash I think we are still
a bit in limbo. SNDK misses numbers and one third of the market cap disappears overnight.
Without some additional foundation in the cellphone market it is easy to envision volatility.

Hope the slide show has some mini-SD and transflash projections.
