I have been an IBM shareholder for several years, and have done business with the IBM semiconductor group for 20 years.

I have been convinced for some time that IBM will ease out of many of their hardware products, putting the emphasis on services. I expect them to eventually get out of semiconductors, as well. The problem is that hardware requires too much investment. With fabrication facilities now costing over a billion dollars (and needing major upgrades every couple of years), it is very hard to maintain decent margins.
