We called it lutefisk and it smelled pretty bad.

"Lutfisk" is Swedish, in Norway (and Denmark) the closest thing was "klipfisk".
Those Norwegians like highjacking our inventions!
As an international dish it is now called baccalat.

The thing that smells pretty bad (a true understatement...) is indeed "surstromming", fermented small herrings on cans ready to explode and it calls for a few drinks up front to rake up the courage to attack them.
But believe me, it is good!

Close to Kloster Andechs, home of World's Best Beer.
