The primary problem with empire has not been damage to material interests. The primary problem has been the disruption of cultural norms, displacement of native elites, and general sense of grievance at social subordination. Read "A Passage to India", which is very good on the subject.

Since you are rather vague in your comments on "where we are", I don't really have a response.
