If more politicians and flag wavers had the real world experience, their "judgement calls" would improve geometrically.

Yes, I agree it becomes a judgement call but my point was that in making that call we should never, ever, attempt to denigrate the huge sacrifice we require from those who enter combat. When we attempt to quantify the losses as "not large" or "minor compared to ..." we fall into the trap of quantifying rather than qualifying the costs. Men are not dollars to be spent like currency. The "spent" lives don't recirculate; they are lost forever and they take with them the dreams, loves and happiness of those who cherish them. Every life lost in war, and every life taken, is an obscenity. That doesn't mean we shouldn't engage in war, it only means that we should weigh the costs properly. Ed
