Saddam invaded Iran on his own initiative because he wanted their oil reserves. Same reason he invaded Kuwait. Same reason he coveted Saudi Arabia.

Saddam did not invade Iran or or Kuwait at the behest of the US. The Persian Gulf is vital to the world's economy. The US would like all the Persian Gulf countries peacefully pumping out oil. It does not want anyone's army's crossing anyone's borders in the region.

These types of charges are kicked around because liberals have been taught to see the US as the source of all evil. A real problem.
