Yes, somewhat. Both services advertise "CD Quality" sound, but both are compressed. They are better than FM, in general, but not quite as good as CD (music channels). Talk channels are heavily compressed, since they can easily get away with it.

Generally, some music channels are more heavily compressed than others. XM carries a 40s-era music channel, where the originals are crappy to begin with; so, a little more comrpession there is fairly benign. Same with talk/comedy.

I'm a fairly critical listener, and the compression doesn't really bother me on my high-end system at home, and is really not usually noticeable on my factory system in the car.

Keep in mind, most auto listeners are using wireless FM Modulators, so these aren't the most discriminating listeners, if you know what I mean.
