Just commenting on the obvious. Re. the Philippines 100 years ago, I'd say we should have stayed out. Though I don't kid myself about the fact that other imperial powers more ruthless (hint: one starts with "J") than America would have colonized the Philippines much more brutally if we'd simply left after kicking out the Spanish. What about Vietnam? Shouldn't have put troops in, but once we did we should have done what was necessary to keep SVN free - as we did in S Korea. Ironically the Congressional Democrats both got us into VN then cut off aid to SVN in 1975 to ensure it fell. Was blowing up a Iranian civilian airliner a good thing? No, but I think it was a mistake. I'm sure you "know" it wasn't, the heart of evil in the world (America) can't make mistakes. Giving arms to Iran? It was a mistake to trade arms for hostages held by Iranian sponsored terrorists. Supporting Osama Bin Laden? Never happened. Saudis didn't need our help, being rich and all. Now if you said we were allies of OSL against the Soviet Union, sort of like we had been allies of Stalin against Hitler, you'd at least be accurate. Though that would be less emotionally satisfying, harder to work up the hate. How comfortable are you that 25 or 50 years from now what we are doing today will be viewed in a scrupulously benevolent light? Intelligent unbiased observors will reach the right conclusions. Biased blame-America-for-everything types won't wait 25 seconds to condemn America.
