We had a goldfish- but we found it a very nice home before we left the country. Our goldfish used to pick up little rocks in its mouth and put them in its clam shell. It could play like that for hours. It had other games too. The man we gave it to sends us little pictures of it, occasionally, and he says it is the livliest fish in his tank, and it still plays with the little rocks at the bottom of the tank. I would only put an animal down in a way I would want to be put down- and I would never, in my wildest dreams, request to be boiled alive.
