The claim being put forward is that the US wanted Iran to be ruled by Khomeini because religious fanatics could be counted on to be anti-communist.

Now the problem is that the Shah, a real American ally for decades, was already ruling Iran and he could also be counted on to be anti-communist.

And you're claiming the purpose of the US getting Saddam to invade Iran was to force Iran to buy spare parts for their military equipment from us.

Problem here is that in April 1980, the US was pre-occupied with getting the hostages freed. April 24 & 25 was when the failed rescue attempt was made. Also April 1980 is when the US formally severed diplomatic relations with Iran and slapped a complete economic embargo on the country.
