Going forward my position is not only show me the weather but show me the draws. We have 10 weeks of predictions of cold weather and so far we have above normal behind us this heating season and at least a week of way above normal forecasted.

These forecasts more than a week out have been worthless.

Joe Bastardi today, subject to translation??:

SUNDAY MORNING TIDBITS:
Low level number bashing discharge reaching New York and New england today and tonight, setting stage for weather fight tonight and tomorrow with frozen precip threat i-90 and 80 corridors to southern New england. Snow and ice could reach as far south as mason Dixon line but heaviest amounts north. Looks like alot of 1-3 s with lollipop to 6 ( may require a slanted ruler..ha ha)

Trough locks into east by weekend and should stay much of the rest of the month.. pattern goes to warm west, back and forth, but probably becoming colder with time plains, and cold east for last 15-20 days of month. GFS showing more runs with this idea ( In other words while it flips on the details, one sees it more and more putting shot of coldest air in N America into the lakes in day 10-15. This is often the sign it is sniffing something out.

The longer the trof locks in, the greater the threat of severe cold developing. What is severe? ok more than 10 degrees below normal in one spot for at least a week and 3 days averaging 20 or more below normal. Still cant make definite call though.

Like the idea of most places north of 35 north that have seen snow yet getting accumulating snow before Christmas, and I like the looks of this pattern for widespread white christmas/ Approximate areal coverage east of Mississippi into areas that have only 1 in 4 chance. Plains dicier, but I have faith if this trof locks, the cold rocks and the southern stream does its dirty work.
