Anger at this in the Muslim world is what started the rise of terrorism, and let's be frank. We support Israel not for any altruistic purpose, but because it serves our strategic interests in the region. Another naive view is that America can bring "democracy" to Iraq by flattening large cities like Fallujah and killing over 100,000 innocent people. You are correct that women's rights have a lot way to go in Muslim societies. However, there are exceptions--for example, Turkey, in which women do have rights. Democracy for women in Muslim societies will spread when we stop trying to destroy them. Our war with them helps empower the most extreme elements like the Taleban. In any event, there are abusive practices towards women all over the world. The societies that treat women fairly are few and far between if you look at the big picture. However, I don't see America invading India or China or pretty much the entire continent of Africa, where women are abused just as badly. The solution for women is a more level playing field in all senses of the word--birth control on demand, a higher standard of living, better education. America could help with those things. But if you believe that we invaded the Muslim regions of the world because we are concerned about the status of their womenfolk, well, naive is the word again. George Bush did exactly what Osama bin Laden hoped he would do. Do you think we're in more of a mess today than right after 9/11, or less of one? There weren't very many terrorists in Iraq before we toppled Saddam Hussein, who in his own interests kept a very tight lid on things. Now it is full of brand new terrorists who were simply Iraqi citizens before we invaded. You would do exactly the same thing if another country invaded America. It continues to amaze me that a great number of Americans are so thick they cannot figure out the simplest things about this conflict. What a great recruiting tool for Osama! I am sure he is very amused, and not only that, he is totally free. Another failure of Georgie Porgie "Bring It On" Bushie. I don't think Osama is very scared. But we all should be.
