Don't forget: Beset by advanced cancer, the shah left Iran in January 1979 to begin a life in exile.

plus:
He lived in Egypt, Morocco, the Bahamas, and Mexico before going to the United States for treatment of lymphatic cancer. His arrival in New York City led to the Iranian takeover of the American Embassy in Tehran by "Students of Imam's Line" and the taking hostage of more than 50 Americans for 444 days.

The Shah died in Cairo, Egypt, on July 27, 1980.

Then there is the son too.

PS That is, the cancer was clearly a destabilizing factor, first among the insiders, later on even more.

PPS If he would have been allowed to die in Mexico, maybe history would have gone slightly differently??

Plus the Royal Dibah-lovers, always loving some good, glossy pictures.

Btw, great architecture, movies, etc, etc pouring out of Iran

I was an adult at the time and paid attention to what was going on in the world. I remember the Carter administration being caught by surprise and Carter himself being personally and publicly shocked by the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. The Carter administration clearly wasn't in the driver's seat of history controlling the Soviet Union like a puppet on their string. Regardless of however Brzezinski apple polishes his record many years later. In recent years, Brzezinski has been trying to grab part of the credit for the fall of the Soviet Union by painting himself as some sort of Svengali. The conspiracy mongers (Final Call, Zmag, Rev. Worker, Larouchies) eat it up.

It is foolish to suppose Saddam has ever been a puppet on anyone's string either.
