Hi Ray - The under the radar problem is partially solved by putting up an EC-?? Hawkeye (sort of carrier based mini-AWACS) with look down radar at say 20,000 feet.

F-14 and F-18 have been upgraded to look down/shoot down capability a number of years ago.

The capability is there to stop aircraft.

The newer sea skiming missles that aircraft launch (sort of updated Exocets) are a serious problem.

The Phalnax close in anti-missle system works fairly well, but can likely be over whelmed with multiple missle launches.

Aircraft carriers are so useful for projecting power, that there is a willings to spend immense sums of money reducing their vulnerablilites.
