It certainly seems that way. It's hard to believe that the champion of the PAC-2 will play the champion of the Big-2 and the little 10 for the national championship. Auburn has taken a hit for thier non-conferance schedule. Most don't know that Auburn was scheduled to play Bowling Green this year. Bowling Green was offered more money by Oklahoma and backed out. Auburn filled the schedule with the Citadel. I've never figured out the formatting thing here on SI, so the schedule comparison below looks screwed up. Oklahoma should not be in the championship game as they should not have been last year. OU's beaten Texas in the usual Texas choke, but otherwise their only other win in the top 25 is against Texas A&M. Out of Auburn's 12 games, 4 have been against top 15 opponents (they were ranked higher at the time of the game). Other wins have been against good programs during down years (Alabama,Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss. State). I don't favor an extended playoff system in the future, but I think a #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3 bowl game on January 1 followed by a championship game two weeks later should be the answer.
