It is certainly possible to see God as totality as Spinoza did. What is feckless is the human habit of creating Gods at their own moral and intellectual level. God has softened as societies have civilized and as superstition has been pushed back into the shadows. But even the most modern Gods put one in mind of beggars of both the body and the mind.
