Lighted decorations were a big deal in my hometown. I'll bet that half the people decorated their homes. Going around to see what different people had done was a major event of the holidays. Some of the displays were religious. Almost everyone did something even if it was only a string of lights along the roof line.

My first recollection of any issue was the "under God" business. I recall being confused and annoyed by it. Even then, when I was still Catholic, I always left the "under God" out of it because I thought it was clumsy and I liked it better the way I learned it. Still say it the old way. Still stuck in my craw although now for different reasons.

It got started in the 1890s, but there was a sort of hiatus and it had a resurgence in the 1970's

I don't know who started this war. I don't remember if it was the atheists suddenly making an issue of the status quo or the fundamentalists suddenly upping the Christian hegemony, thus poking a stick at those who were getting along OK under the old scheme. But they've been back and forth at each other ever since and I'm sick of it. IMO, those who oppose the creches, TC, etc. are reacting more to the sense of entitlement and lack of consideration of those who insist on those symbols than they are at the symbols themselves. If everyone could just lose the 'tude, this wouldn't be such a difficult problem. But then I can't relate, despite considerable effort, to those who are all Jesus all the time and thing it's their right to exude it. Sort of like people who douse themselves in perfume...
