Twelve years ago I started getting dirty looks for wishing people in the workplace "Merry Christmas," and was forcibly reminded to say "Happy Holidays" until I finally fell in with the program.

I don't subscribe to PC, particularly with arm twisting. But it's thoughtless to say "Merry Christmas" rather than "Happy Holidays" to someone not known to be a Christian. Somehow that doesn't seem to occur to the more consumed Christians. If you don't know, the default is to say "Happy Holidays." If they were not so inconsiderate in their sharing of Christmas spirit, there would never have been such a backlash from those who don't appreciate the smothering hegemony. Yes, I think the backlash is excessive, as bad as the original discourtesy, but offices should not have to write policies to force adults to be respectful of others.
