"Great Transformation" by Karl Polanyi, Beacon Press, Boston, New Edition 2001 .

He's right that world trade has never promoted peace. The English and the Dutch fought a series of wars while each was the other's chief trading partner. One ended with Dutch warships sailing down the Thames (during the reign of Charles II) and the other ended with an English victory over the Dutch Navy (during the reign of William and Mary).
