I think we may see a massive shrinkage of the American middle class in our lifetimes.

It's already occurring. But it's happening sequentially to different industries, rather than simultaneously to all as in the Great Depression. It is going to result in a realignment of American politics. Right now both parties are supporting policies that are damaging the American middle class.

I have to agree... and it will happen in stealth mode, by the time people realize it... it will be well set in...

the only possible opportunity for change is if the government allows private enterprise to truly compete globally... but even then... I am not sure we can compete with the masses of cheap labor of the third world without having to reduce the standard of living as it is currently known...
