It is my hope that we can lift this thread to some discourse on substantive issues. If you agree that left wingers should stand up for any of the following, please pick your fave and take a stand for it...feel free to include the obligatory bush bash at the end if you must but let us see what YOU are made of first. Economic growth for everyone, not just a few at the top. Educational opportunities for all through a strong, public education system Fair and equitable implementation of the law, regardless of social status, race, gender, sexual preference, or income. Compassion and dignified assistance for the weak, disabled, and the poor to enable those who can, to become self-sufficient. Promoting individual responsibility and discipline in all aspects of our lives. Strong and effective, but not wasteful, national defense. Special concern for the "common man and woman" -- government should be accessible to all. Neighborhoods where people feel comfortable leaving their doors unlocked Safe drinking water, clean air, uncontaminated food. The covenants of the United States Constitution, one of which is to keep religion free of government intervention or persuasion. Fiscal responsibility (balanced budget) and fair taxation, centered around the concerns of middle and low income families. The American work tradition, whereby employee commitment and hard work is valued and rewarded by employers. Your rights to organize and negotiate for fair wages and a healthy and safe work place, without the fear of losing your job! Government as a catalyst for change, not a cure for all social ills; it is also not "the enemy" of the people, just a citizen-designed tool that can be used properly or improperly. Democrats support the ethic of providing for the general welfare for the betterment of all citizens as specified in the preamble to the Constitution of the United States.
