Hi Amy,

Bush's plan is to privatize only a portion of it, thus the 4% to a max of $1K. You will still get most of your social security payout in addition to whatever that $1K per year grows into. So it is a net win for you and me.

However, the ideal thing would be to privatize the entire amount we pay into SS. But Democrats would never let that happen. All Bush is trying to do here is to get the ball rolling. If he can get this small beach-head on privatization and people see that the world didn't fall apart and that they are better off, then that will open the door to more aggressive privatization.
