OK, Amy. But you have to think like a long term strategist. Otherwise, you get nothing. Bush and the Republicans know two things: 1) the Democrats will pull out all the stops to block SS reform and 2) most people don't understand finance, so it is easy to fool people into believing there's nothing wrong with SS.

Given those facts, Bush and friends are taking a baby step approach, with the hope that it will open the door to more privatization in the future. Remember how he cut taxes on 2 different occassions in his first term and left making them permanent for the second term? He was able to get both tax cust passed and is now trying to make them permanent. If he'd tried to cut taxes all at once, in one big effort, AND tried to make them permanent, he would have never been able to get that legistlation pushed through Congress.

The same thing applies to SS. Bush can't give us everything we want around SS reform, because he knows the opposition will have an easy time killing it. So he's taking one small baby step to get people used to the idea. Then with his trademark dogged determination, he can then push for more.

But if even people from your generation won't support his good faith effort, then I can promise you that there is no hope of ever getting SS reform passed. Right now, we have the best chance to reform SS that I've ever seen in my entire life. This opportunity may not come around again for a very long time, because most Presidents (Rep. and Dem.) won't touch this issue with a 10 foot pole. Bush is unique in that he truly doesn't give a crap what people think of him. So if you want something done for your generation and mine, you'd better support Bush on this or you'll end up with nothing.
