Let UN chief get on with job: Blair
James Bone, New York
December 08, 2004
TONY Blair threw his weight behind Kofi Annan yesterday amid a growing clamour in the US for the UN Secretary-General to resign over the Iraq oil-for-food scandal.

The British Prime Minister told a press conference in London with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf that criticism of Mr Annan was "unfair" and that he was "grateful for his leadership on many occasions".

"I believe Kofi Annan is doing a fine job ... often in very difficult circumstances," Mr Blair said. "I hope very much he is allowed to get on with his job."

The European Union and African leaders have rallied round Mr Annan since a US Republican senator leading a congressional investigation of the oil-for-food scandal called for his resignation last week.

US President George W.Bush conspicuously failed to endorse Mr Annan's leadership, calling instead for an open investigation of alleged corruption in the largest humanitarian program in UN history.

Darleen > It is a tremendous problem for future development high interest rates curb growth one would think you would be leading the choir.

Everything in SAf now is politics, especially the politics of enriching blacks. One of the methods being employed, as per ANC-inspired laws, is that all businesses must sell a portion (15-50%) of their capital to a "black economic empowerment" partner, whether the "partner" has funds to buy that equity or not. So all kinds of financing deals are being made. It struck me that a reason why the government is encouraging the strong rand is actually to depress the price of export oriented businesses and for this reason. Today, in SA, and in this way, they have created, maybe, twenty, thirty, enormously rich blacks, I'm talking multi-billionaires, one can call them oligarchs, similar to those in Russia. Although these are not involved in government, they are "well connected".

That's why they chose Miss Amerika (AKA Ms Rice) to be the new Sec of State. Besides being W's pin-up doll, she's an alleged Sovietologist.
