They are at a disadvantage in that department...and even if they had a good leader, I doubt Israel would allow him to emerge. It is much better for Israel to have a bunch of rif-raf ugly violent "terrorists" at its doorsteps than people who could actually take their rights back.

Sharon can see that the long term prospects of his only ally may not be that great. He needs peace now, when the US is still holding on to its "only superpower" role.

If the Palestinians are smart they will bend over backwards and force Sharon's hand.

They have not been smart to date. We can only hope with the passing of Arafat, that they will start to get smart. Unfortunately, every time someone steps out for peace on either side, there are enough agitators and foes of the peace process that will submarine the process.
