Croc,

I see what you mean about the concerns over ballistic missle defense in Canada. However, I haven't seen much political concern expressed about it here in Alaska. But AK is a red state so folks here are more inclined to believe in faith-based ideas like the notion that the system will actually work, and that we can actually pay for it by growing our way out of the deficit.

The US is building the first BMD northeast of here at Fort Greeley. The local paper did interview a waitress in nearby Delta Junction who was philosophically opposed to it, but was nevertheless enjoying all the extra business at her restaurant.

Years ago Anchorage was protected by NIKE missles to defend against Soviet bombers. When the missiles eventually became obsolete the military fired one off to celebrate the Fourth of July. Then the former NIKE base got turned into a world-class cross-country ski area where I often hike and bike in the summer. Somehow this gives me hope for the future. I think you've seen a few of my photos from that park.
