i guess i do not understand.

I guess I do not understand what it is that you don't understand.

I imagine that most non-religious families have Christmas trees. People that I know personally who have children have done the Santa and tree thing. As for people from other religious traditions, I remember reading stories about the issue in Jewish households about whether to have a tree or not. Apparently the question is a big deal. I remember that some do and some don't. I'm fuzzy about the details. I have no clue about what Buddhists or Sikhs or Muslims do about trees and presents or how many generations it takes to pick up the tradition. I agree with you that it makes sense to have a tree, etc. If I had kids in the house, I'd have a tree, too.)

I really think they were out celebrating and perhaps the only reason they were in church was flash backs to childhood days.

If the Church of today reminded me of my childhood, I might be tempted to go, too, although I probably wouldn't because I think that seats on Christmas are scarce and I wouldn't want to take the space of someone who belonged there. I loved the organ and the incense and the Latin and the ceremony. It would just make me sad to go now.

(A while back Charles Hennessy put me onto a Latin mass in my area. I had forgotten about that until just now. I tried without success to talk a friend into going with me but she wanted no part of it and I never followed through. She's still hostile towards the Church. I've gotten past that. Maybe it's that I'm ten years older than she.)
