LL,

The whole pharmaceuticals thing makes me very annoyed. I think people resort to medications far too frequently -- probably to the detriment of their health in many cases.

And then, there's the "other" threat associated with consumption of pharmaceuticals -- and that's the contamination of waste water. Those working in the field of aquatic species are becoming increasingly alarmed at the occurrence of all sorts of pharmaceutical residues that are finding their way into watersheds after being released as waste water from filtration plants. Just a few articles from all over on some of the things that are turning up:

Male fish becoming female? (Colorado)
msnbc.msn.com

Prozac found in drinking water (Britain)
news.bbc.co.uk

Side effects may waylay nature:
Experts now warn that flushing unused medicines down toilets and drains could pollute our waters and harm wildlife.
greatlakesdirectory.org

A journal article on a recent USGS study (long form)
"Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, and Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants in U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance"
pubs.acs.org

Meanwhile, some cities are trying to figure out how to recycle waste water for use in drinking water.

hmmmm....
