The batthists and the foreign terrorists are trying to expel what they perceive as a foreign power. The Shite are foreign to them. Sunni's have had a hold on power for a long time, and they don't want to lose control. Saddam trained them that you control by violence and intimidation. That is what they are attempting to do.

No you're thats exactly what its about. Its pretty arrogant on the part of Sunnis, who make up only 20% of the population, to think they have some birthright to power and sujugation of the majority Shia.

I'm not a ME expert by any means, but I take an interest in the development of emerging democracies. I've ordered Kenneth Pollack's new book The Persian Puzzle : The Conflict Between Iran and America (Random House, 2004) in order to acquire a better understanding of the history and circumstances that brought the ME to this place in time.

I do know a bit about human nature though, and I believe that Iraqis desire peace, security and opportunity just like the rest of us.

Let me use this analogy as an example:

If the people in your town (especially the police or groups organized to insure security) were being stalked and brutally murdered by organized groups or individuals, I would presume the people of your town would unite to find and remove those threats.

I believe Iraqis will do the same thing after democratic election takes place because of the sense of nationalism will have been instilled by that election.

I don't care whether the Sunnis are a minority.....the world if full of minorities. They are capable of understanding that if they are to survive they will be required to offer ideas and suggestions inclusive to that society. They are also perfectly capable of understanding that they will be driven out or eliminated from that society if they don't.

Some of them are murdering thugs/tyrants, (really not unlike certain individuals in the 20th century who shall remain unnamed) and like all murdering thugs will die being murdering thugs. The rest of the Sunnis, and other minorities, will have to decide whether they are up to the challenge.
