MJ,

I have an educational writing about the gap theory on my home site that goes into more detail but in general, when a stock's opening price gaps up higher than the previous days close, a “gap” is created.

In technical theory, gaps always should be viewed as warning sign for the long trader. Gaps always get back filled, meaning that the price will eventually drop back to the place in price to where the gap began.

See my chart in hopes that you will understand.
