Mike, re: Bush has to know what happened to LBJ and does not want a McCarthy/RFK challenge within his party setting things off.

Bush and his political advisors have exhibited, in my view, utter disdain for the astuteness of the American voting public. They understand that voters can be marginalized, confused, terrified and herded like sheep as long as their daily lives are not too adversely affected. So far their assessments have been accurate.

I think that their values, their goals and their motivations are very different from yours. I would not, therefor, put too much credence in what you think a rational leader would do given your assessment of the situation. Ed

But Mike, Iraq II was Bush's defining endeavour from his 1'st term. Do you really think he can "spin" his way out of failure? Politically it is win or die for Bush. JMHO! He can't whitewash the evening news for the next few years if Iraq falls apart. If Bush's approach to solving a problem leads to this mess, then what about his views on SS, deficits, global warming, you name it. He will be seen as just as clueless in any other field.

It reminds me of a conversation I had with my wife's nephew, an 18 yr old who is having some transition to adulthood issues. We agreed to give him free rent in a house we own, but he was required to sign up for remedial courses at the local C. College so he could start college winter quarter. The requirement was he had to pass the class, get into college and keep passing his classes to get free rent. He objected that the requirement should be that he "really tried". I pointed out that in the Adult world, trying does not count. Success does. The same is true of our elected leaders. Hoping and trying does not count. Success does.

BTW, I agree that pressure must come from the Reps, not the Dems for obvious reasons.
